generally the largest single expense low-income households face.
According to the federal government, housing is “affordable” to a
low-income family as long as the cost of housing (rent or
mortgage/tax payments plus basic utilities) does not exceed 30
percent of household income. Consistent with this standard,
households earning $11,000/year or $917/month (minimum wage) cannot
afford to pay more than $275/month for rent and utilities. People with disabilities who may be receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or who work in low wage jobs find it very difficult to find housing that is affordable. This Federal Housing Resource Guide provides information on key federal programs and resources that can be used to assist low-income people with disabilities with their housing needs.
